Galactica 1980: The Return of Starbuck

Friday, April 20, 2007

I've been watching Galactica 1980, a follow-on series to the original Battlestar Galactica television series. In this series, Galactica has found Earth, and try to establish relationships with Earth through Dillon and Troy. Its fairly typical of early 1980's sci-fi, and looks horribly dated and camp against the mid-80s series of Star Trek the Next Generation.

The tenth episode of Galactica 1980 stands apart from the rest of the series, it brings back the legendary Starbuck, and how Doctor Zee came to be. It follows Starbuck's struggle for survival on the planet Starbuck. Starbuck finds a crashed Cylon ship and three broken Cylons. He manages to rebuild one of them for some companionship. That relationship gives rise to the following exchange between Starbuck and a Cylon - Starbuck's unearths a logical but ultimately ludicrous series of decisions from his new Cylon friend:

(referring to the crashed Cylon ship)

Starbuck
Not exactly a text-book landing. No offence, but were you at the controls during that touchdown?
Cylon
Cylons work as a team. We are equals.
Starbuck
Yeah well that's a very nice policy except when things start going wrong. So, what happened during the landing?
Cylon
The situation did not compute.
Starbuck
So you didn't know what to do. What happened next, someone whip out the manual?
Cylon:
Yes. The manual did not help.
Starbuck
What did you do when it came time for a little personal initiative?
Cylon
We were taking a vote when the ground came up and hit us.
