Surfing or Sucking on the Web?

Thursday, April 17, 2003

Tim Bray has a short entry about the user agents populating his web server log files, and he's well aware of the trend and direction of the World Wide Web. His comment sums it up nicely:

"Increasingly the Web is not a crowd of people randomly or purposefully stumbling (hah, they say surfing?!?!) from link to link, but instead, those same people sitting back waiting for whatever it is they use to suck to encounter some input and package it up for them."

I can't say I'm surprised about the comment, but there are many people out there designing web sites that will refuse to acknowledge the obvious. Every day that passes the number of automated and scripted agents using the web increases. The web is too big and too cluttered for human beings to be left to manually intensive tasks.
