Sony Clie: Wireless Networking PDA
Monday, July 21, 2003Sony are making some bold moves, and have a PDA prepared that can match the Sharp Zaurus. One of the nice things about PDAs is that you just slide it in your pocket and off you go. Wouldn't it be nice to have a PDA that gave more functionality than an electronic address book and to-do list. Playing Asteroids and Worms might be great for a while - but being able to browse the web whilst on the move is probably the killer app we are waiting for.
The Sony Clie PEG-UX50 ("personal entertainment communicator") is what I am waiting for. Its list of features reads like a road-warrior laptop (and most of the Sony Vaio range):
- Wireless LAN (IEEE802.11b) and Bluetooth networking
- 180 degree swivle screen - used as a flip-up or tablet style
- 3.2 inch TFT LCD with a resolution of 480 x 320 pixels landscape, displaying 65536 colours
- Sony Handheld Engine - their own processor, based on the ARM range of processors (variable speed between 8MHz and 123MHz)
- 96 Mb memory (32Mb DRAM and 64Mb Flash)
- 310K-pixel resolution digital camera build into the hinge (640x480 pixel images), 3x digital zoom
- Infrared and USB
- Version 5.2 of PalmOS
- 16 hour battery life for continuous playback of music or five hours for video
- 10.3cm x 8.6cm x 1.8cm, weighing 175 grams
- $699 suggested price-tag
- Smallest PDA to date
The launch date in the US is scheduled for September. No mention of a UK launch date yet.
